about

Mike Montrey Band is planning to release a series of live performances a few times a year, beginning May 14, 2021. The series will be called the Live Cal Series, named for MMB archivist, Frank Calandruccio, a long time fan, who has curated a collection of live performances from Mike Montrey dating back to 2007, including various incarnations of the band.

For this first selection, Cal has chosen 3.1.19 Highland Brewing Co. Asheville, NC. This date finds the band deep in the throes of a tour to support 2018's classic album, John Street, which brought the band to Nashville, Austin, Denver, L.A., and Chicago, among other places. MMB was in top form on this night, and they deliver a memorable two set performance, filled with both tight and stretched out versions of material spanning the catalog. The lineup on this date is Mike Montrey guitar/vocals, Jen Augustine vocals, Anthony Duca bass/vocals, Phil Silverberg keys, Rob Smith drums, and Jack Stanton pedal steel guitar. There are solid performances of several John Street songs, with some standouts being Aether and Chaos, Beauty and Wine, featuring an extended, soaring Montrey guitar solo, A Lifetime Made of Glass, which features some stretched out organ work from Silverberg, and a blazing pedal steel guitar solo from Stanton on the 1st set closer, Everytime the Sun Begins to Show. 2015's release, Song by Song by Song is represented with a stellar version of the charming duet, Therapeutic Bliss. The band also pulls from 2012's Weaving the Basket, as Skeleton Key provides what is possibly the jam-highlight of the set to close it out. Four covers that MMB has played with some regularity are included. Bob Dylan's, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You, re-worked as a duet, shines, while Augustine takes lead vocals on a storming version of the Jimmy Cox standard, Nobody Knows When You're Down and Out, as well as a stretched out take on Baby, I Love You, as recorded by Aretha Franklin. The second release, slated for later this year, will be the livestream release show for 2020's, In The Middle of Hope 9.26.20 THE SAINT Asbury Park, NJ.
